Our client is seeking a confident, curious underwriter/new business handler for their unique and highly specialized insurance. Our client is the nation’ s only non-profit mutual insurer of wage loss due to discipline for union transportation workers. They have been in business since 1910, and maintain a small, congenial office in Southfield, Michigan. Our client has been recognized as a Michigan and national Great Place to Work in 2015 and 2016. They have received numerous prizes as a great service company as well.
They currently have approximately 29, 000 members, who buy their coverage individually. They are not a benefit of employment or of union membership.
Their underwriting is unique to their special coverage, and is based upon union membership and craft. They perform their own risk analysis, with the assistance of the IT department and independent auditor. Policyholders are all union transportation workers. Most are railroad union members and also have a number of professional delivery drivers and truckers.
The Underwriter will use the proprietary system to review and issue policies. This is a paperless environment for the claim and underwriting processes.
Skills necessary to succeed at the job:
- Excellent customer service skills; the ability to solve problems, explain coverages and interact with rail and trucker clients;
- Ability to learn and to explain underwriting requirements, application and application process;
- The ability to communicate by phone and in writing regarding underwriting, policy issuance and similar subjects;
- Enthusiasm for their mission: bringing financial security to transportation workers and their families.
