This position is responsible for providing legal assistance and administrative work in support of the Legal Services Department in a variety of special projects, including compliance activities, risk management initiatives, and policy development and review.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Collaborates with the Compliance Officer and the Legal Services Coordinator in the development of agency policies as required in accordance with relevant statutes, contractual requirements and accreditation standards; coordinates at least annually the review and/or periodic revision of policies; provides assistance with drafting, editing and updating policies/procedures to other departmental policy authors as necessary. In conjunction with the Network Management Department, participates in the organization’s procurement process to review and evaluate prospective contractors, required credentials, and other factors in awarding contracts to applicants. Provides administrative support to the Legal Services Department in preparation for, or in coordination with fraud investigation efforts, litigation activities, administrative hearings, or other related legal matters. Supports case preparation by preparing case/hearing summaries and materials; and obtaining responsive records; and organizing materials for review. Drafts Corrective Action Plans to address organization’s identified risk management or contractual noncompliance deficiencies and provides administrative support to improve the quality of services in the implementation of Corrective Action Plans. Coordinates and participates in resolution of contract noncompliance matters relating to organization’s Contractors.  Participates in meetings, drafts and/or reviews correspondence, and works collaboratively with Network Management Department to evaluate Contractors’ Corrective Action Plans to remediate contractual noncompliance or service delivery matters. Performs special projects as assigned on behalf of the Legal Services Department, including preparation activities for accreditation recertification. Provides factual and legal research support; analyzes results; provides follow-up reports to Compliance Officer/Associate Attorney or designee(s); proofs and edits documents for typographic and grammatical errors.


Qualifications and Requirements:   

Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services or Business field required. Master’s Degree in Human Services, Business or relevant field or Juris Doctorate preferred and may be considered in lieu of work experience.  Periodic scheduled and non-scheduled travel is required in executing essential duties and responsibilities of this position.  Employee must provide own transportation. 


Relevant experience in applicable health care compliance standards, federal/state statutes regulating confidentiality, executing analytical and/or investigative responsibilities, detecting fraud, waste and abuse, and knowledge of Medicare/Medicaid funded programs.

Ability to apply management and leadership skills to attain and maintain compliance efforts in a cost-effective manner. Excellent organizational skills; Ability to communicate effectively and draft written documents as assigned; Proficiency with word, excel, and outlook programs. Knowledge of the Michigan Mental Health Code, applicable state, federal, local rules/regulations pertaining to services for seniors and disabled adults or persons with developmental disabilities (including without limitation confidentiality, advance directives, and Recipient Rights). This position requires the ability to handle sensitive information and material in a highly confidential manner.

Pay will be between $21-$26(max) per hour
